Beautiful but tough week.

Spring has arrived in full bloom. Check our some of the Pear trees blooming, the crabapple and the Redbud.   The grass in the new pasture is a beautiful green color...it was even time to mow the grass.

On a sadder note, we lost 2 baby cows.  Raising a calf which has been removed from it's mother is not an easy proposition. We have continually battled respiratory problems and scour. We unfortunately have a less than 50% success rate. We get lots of advice from other farmers who have tried different things, sometimes they seem to work, sometimes not.

So, even though we post cute photos and have fun times, there are struggles. I am sure there is a lesson for us in this just as in everything in life.  We continue to live our lives and complete our daily work knowing that God is in control and has a plan.

Grandkids at the farm

Mike and his girls and Becky and the kids came out to play this morning.

We had a great time outside checking out the animals and playing in the yard.

March 23, 2013

Spring has arrived with more promise of new life.

We had a nice rain overnight and this morning which is good since Howard put down some more seed in the Hay pasture on Friday.

And another cool front is moving through, so the wood stove is still fired up. (Sorry for the blurry photo, hard to tell when doing everything by cell phone.)

Don't mind Howard trying to eat the baby chicks...wishful thinking.

New baby Sven is doing well.
We allowed Blaze and Ivan to become acquainted to the big pasture for a bit since we moved the 4 older cows to the Back 40. We have three pastures for the cows to rotate between. The Main pasture, Back 40 behind the house, and the Oklahoma pasture due to its shape.  Come for a visit any time and take a stroll.

March 16 Farm Report

Today I had help on the Saturday morning chores. Carson and Emily are here for the day while Becky and John clean their Chattanooga home between renters. The kids and I also went and got some new baby chicks to add to the coop. Grandma Statkus is here for a few weeks also.

Monday Farm report!

I'm only 2 days behind. It was a beautiful Saturday morning when I took these photos. It was sunny and warm all day.
What is that mystery item...some people will know, I just thought it was interesting looking that morning. The baby cows and baby chicks continue to grow.
The older cows mostly drink from the pond now, the pond is getting better at holding water.
I took some photos of garden areas too. Howard added a new peach tree and apple tree to our orchard area. Onions are in the ground, waiting for warmer weather for the rest.
What is the mystery photo?  A cow lick, salt and minerals.

March farm report.

Wow, in with cold weather this morning!

The cows were all hungry. Check out the baby cow cave we have for the little ones to hide in when it's cold. They even have a space heater.

The baby chicks have lost all their cute fuzz, feel sorry for them with their "awkward in-between faze".

The guinea hens continue their roaming, fun to chase around and listen to their noise.

The promise of Spring is in the air.

Lots of work to do this week...found a fallen tree this morning and more rooted tree root holes in the pasture that need to be filled.
